The Vanderbilt Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) prepares students for faculty and research positions of leadership in the biomedical sciences. At the heart of our MSTP is the conviction that the approach to problem-solving characteristic of Ph.D. training is the most effective pathway to educate first-rate medical scientists.

Welcome. The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is in its 42nd year of continuous NIH support. The mission of the program is to train the next generation of physician-investigators by offering a rigorous, integrated, and supportive educational experience leading to both the MD and PhD The University of Chicago Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) was established in 1967 and is one of the longest running physician-scientist training programs in the country. Our goal is to train the next generation of physician-scientist leaders and to provide all students with rigorous scientific training that prepares them to excel in their field of interest. Case Western Reserve University (then known as Western Reserve University) created and launched the very first MD/PhD program in the country in 1956, nearly a decade before the NIH developed the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) to support this type of training, which had by then spread to other universities. MSTP provides a truly integrated training program, in which students take both a selection of medical school and graduate school courses concurrently within their first 2 years in the program.
